Australian Prime Minister John Howard Challenged to Upgrade Gay Human Rights in Australia by Mardi Gras Film Festival Organisers

Sydney, Australia (PRWeb) January 19, 2007 -- Queer Screen today announced the program for the 2007 Sydney Mardi Gras Film Festival. Opening on February 15th 2007 in Sydney, the annual festival focuses this year on the issue of equal human rights and respect for everyone in the Australian community, and includes screenings of 200 Australian and international films.

Lex Lindsay, Queer Screen's Festival Manager commented, "Australia's Gay and Lesbian community are treated like second class citizens by Australia's Federal Government. John Howard would be screaming from the rooftops if his marriage wasn't recognised by the government, yet this is just one of the many basic rights that the Gay community is still denied here in Australia. I invite Mr Howard to try walking a mile in our shoes, come and see some these films, and then tell us why we don't deserve to be treated equally."

The principal sponsor of the 2007 Mardi Gras Film Festival is Volkswagen. JCDecaux and City of Sydney are major sponsors.

The festival program is available at http://www.queerscreen.com.au, and tickets can be purchased online.

Opening night for the 2007 Mardi Gras Film Festival will screen the finalists of the prestigious My Queer Career short film competition, and will be held at the City Recital Hall at Angel Place.

My Queer Career is held each year to find the best Australian produced short films with a Queer theme. This year judging for the awards has been carried out by At the Movies favourite, Margaret Pomeranz, as well as Anton Enus, Helen Bowden and Ashley Luke. My Queer Career has helped launched the careers of Australian film industry figures such as Adam Elliot (Harvie Crumpet), Tony Ayres (Walking on Water), and Robert Luketic (Legally Blonde).

A major highlight of this year's festival is Queer Kino - a short history of queer cinema from Germany. Queer Kino has been co-curated with the Goethe Institute, and will play at the Chauvel cinema in Paddington. The eminent German film critic and academic, Axel Schock, will introduce each Queer Kino screening.

Queer Kino includes the 1919 silent film classic, Different from Others, which is the first feature film ever made to cover gay themes. This landmark film screening will be shown with Carl Dreyer's silent classic, Michael, and will be accompanied by a live musical performance.

For the closing night of the festival on March 1st 2007, Queer Screen will screen the Sydney premiere of Infamous, a film about the life of Truman Capote.

Putting the sex back into the story of the renowned homosexual novelist Truman Capote, Infamous features hunky new James Bond actor Daniel Craig as the killer on the receiving end of Capote's lust and attention. The star studded cast of Infamous includes Toby Jones, Sandra Bullock, Isabella Rossellini, Sigourney Weaver, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
